The program shows not well-known side of the Auschwitz Memorial which turns out to be one of the most modern preservation workshops in the world. There is no other place where you save such items as a toothbrush, an old suitcase, or a lock of hair. In the series, we tell the story of the German Nazi Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp through the priceless belongings found in a place where over 1,1 million people were murdered – vast majority Jews, but also Poles, Roma and Sinti, Soviet prisoners of war and others.

„The preserved objects stand as a testimony to the history of Auschwitz. They are often connected with the past of particular people and the only trace of their existence. That is why the work on this production was another step for us in preserving the memory of the victims. We also wanted various people, who for many decades have been making an everyday effort to take care for the Memorial Site – including historians, conservators and educators – to talk about it” – emphasizes Rafał Pióro, deputy director of the Museum.

What mystery lies behind the Arbeit Macht Frei gate inscription? What is written in the mysterious notes made by Sonderkommando – priosoners forced to work in gas chambers and crematoria – that can be read-only with a specially designed camera? What does the only preserved floor of a gas chamber look like? Who was the owner of the criminal pseudo- medical tools in block 10? These are just some of the questions the series will tackle.
